Aquamarine is March's birthstone and its name comes for the Latin word "aqua" meaning water. Aquamarine has a hexagonal crystal system and comes from the Beryl family of gemstones. Its cousins are Morganite and Emeralds. It is easy to see to see why this gemstone is so popular with its rich color that ranges from pale to deep blue, evoking the color of the ocean.
In folklore, it is said that the Aquamarine will calm the waves keeping sailors safe at sea. It is also thought to sooth and prolong love and marriage. The world's largest Aquamarine can be viewed at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. It is obelisk in shape and weighs an incredible 10,363 carats and has been dubbed "Dom Pedro".
