Gold Matters  

Gold...it is not the rarest of the metals but it certainly is the most recognizable.  The English name for gold comes from the Germanic word gulþa (meaning gold).  In Latin, gold was called aurum. This is why the chemical symbol for gold is Au.  Gold doesn't rust, corrode, or decay.  It does not get used up or consumed.  These are reasons why gold is used as currency and has been used as jewelry for many centuries. 

Early civilizations equated gold with kings, rulers and most importantly, their gods.  The Aztecs regarded gold as the product of the gods, calling it literally "god excrement".  Throughout history the importance of gold has been documented in hieroglyphics, sacred scrolls, and maps such as the Turin Papyrus Map, the first known map depicting gold deposits. The Bible mentions gold 417 times! From the golden calf in the Old Testament to the gift of the Magi in the New Testament.  

Empires have been built and destroyed over gold.  Gold is long lasting and unaffected by the passage of time.  Wedding rings are usually made of gold, symbolizing eternal love.  The top prizes for athletics, (the Gold Medal at the Olympics) and film, (The Oscar and the Golden Globe) are all made of gold.  Gold, beauty, and power have always gone together.
